P.S. 21 Chatham New York on July 13-15 will be our first Rhythm in Nature Summer Residency, Retreat and World Premiere of a Multi-Ensemble performance of Four Meditations in Impermanence. I am excited to share that we have several slots open in the Residency and Retreat for artists who interested to attend. Several of the artists internationally and in the US in Drum Labs: Rhythm in Nature course and community are signed up and we’re opening up the signup for a few more slots to cap this at 25 maximum!
I believe it takes a diversity of ears and listeners as well as practitioners to really hear what is going on in our environment around us. The residency and retreat focuses on creative practices that help connect to nature and our biodiverse habitats as well as supporting the creativity and health in each artists work and lifestyle and wellbeing.
During these days I will lead alongside multi-instrumentalist , field and studio engineer Jake Landau 3 morning field recording trips on the campus focused on water, river, birdsongs and forests. There will be workshop sessions every morning and evening in Iyengar Yoga with certified Yoga teacher , drummer , and artist Nicolas Chkifi, I will teach two Drum Labs and two Gong Ensembles as well as offer Critique with and for artists performance audio and visual work. Joining us are special guest teachers and performers Phyllis Chen , composer and sound artist leading a workshop in sound and experimental guitarist and improviser Tashi Dorji leading a workshop on his Buddhist influence on improvisation methods having grown up in Bhutan.
July 15 will be a community day at PS 21 where we invite the community alongside the artists of Rhythm in Nature for a Listening Lab along the river and in the evening a world premiere of the multi-ensemble performance Four Meditations on Impermanence with special guests Phyllis Chen and Tasha Dorji , Rhythm in Nature Ensemble and the Albany Youth Symphony Percussion Ensemble performing each movement.
